Chat

Chat is where teams talk: channels for topics, direct messages between people, threads for side conversations. It also holds your drafts, saved messages and scheduled messages, and the Activity feed of everything that is waiting for you.

Where: the Chat app (/channels) and the Activity app (/channels/inbox) in the sidebar's app row.

The Chat sidebar

  • Unread, Channels and Chats above the list narrow it to what is waiting, to rooms only or to people only.
  • Quick views — Saved, Drafts and Scheduled. Drafts and Scheduled show how many are waiting. Discover teams appears when there are teams you may join.
  • Favourites — channels and chats you starred.
  • Chats — your direct and group messages.
  • Teams and channels — each team with its categories and channels, in the order the team set. See all channels under a team lists the ones you are not in yet.
  • The + button at the top adds a channel or starts a direct message.

Main workflows

Join or create a channel

  1. In the Chat sidebar choose Add a channel (or + → New channel).
  2. Pick the team. Search the team's channels; choose one to join it.
  3. To create one, type a name that does not exist yet and choose:
    • Anyone in the team or Invite only,
    • Managed (the server can search, retain and export it) or End-to-end encrypted (only members' devices can read it — no server search, no export, no bots),
    • Text or Voice.

Write, reply and react

  • Type in the composer and press ↵. Shift+↵ adds a line.
  • Hover a message for quick reactions, Reply in thread, save, pin, forward, edit or delete.
  • @name mentions somebody; # names a channel, project, customer or other record.
  • Send later (beside the send button) schedules the message.
  • / opens the slash commands: /remind 30m tea, /poll Lunch?, /call, /invite @anna, /msg @anna hi, /header …, /join #channel, /leave, /search, /help.

Direct messages

  1. + → New direct message, or /msg @name in any room.
  2. Pick a person. Writing to the same person again reopens the same conversation.
  3. Turn on End to end encrypted if only the two of you should be able to read it.

Threads

A reply in a thread keeps the side conversation out of the room. A message with replies shows the repliers' faces and count under it; select it to open the thread panel on the right.

Find something

  • In this room: the search icon in the room header.
  • Everywhere: ⌘K. Messages in encrypted rooms are searched on this device only.

Drafts, saved and scheduled

ViewWhat it holds
Drafts (/channels/drafts)Text you started in any room. It follows you to other devices. Open one to keep writing, or Discard it. Drafts in encrypted rooms are never stored on the server.
Saved (/channels/saved)Messages you saved from their menu, grouped by channel. Nobody is told you saved them.
Scheduled (/channels/scheduled)Messages queued with Send later and /remind reminders, with when each sends. Cancel one from here.

Activity

Activity lists mentions until you read the channel they are in, and notices from other modules (an approval, a task assigned to you) until you open them. Its sidebar narrows the feed to mentions, notifications or one source; when that leaves nothing, Clear filters shows everything again. Clear notifications in the header marks every notice as read.
